How much do your phone calls actually cost?

0800, 0844, 0845, 0870, 03....
With all these new types of phone numbers it does become somewhat confusing and difficault to understand how much calls actually cost.

This simple guide lets you know the cost of calling these numbers from a BT landline, and please bear in mind, calling from a mobile usually is considerably more.

01 and 02 geographic numbers

These are specific location numbers that are used by businesses and residential customers E.g. Bournemouth 01202, London 020, Bristol 0117 etc.
How much do calls cost?
From a BT landline calls are charged between 1.5 & 4.5 per minute depending on the time of day (plus a set up fee) and are included in free call packages.

03 numbers

The 03 range of numbers is relatively new, focusing on non-profit organisations such as the BBC, RSPCA, and charities.
How much do calls cost?
The cost to call these numbers is no more than the national rate (the same as calling 01 or 02 numbers) calls cost up to 4.5 p per minute from a BT landline, and are included in free call packages.

07 mobile numbers

How much do calls cost?
Calls to mobiles are not included in free call packages, and are charged between 6p and 18 p per minute. Calls from mobiles vary depending on the package chosen and are usually more expensive than calls from landlines. Calls between mobiles often include free minutes depending on which call package is chosen.

070 personal numbers

070 numbers are different from mobile numbers, and are more expensive to call. These are often used as a ‘follow me’ service, where calls are diverted on busy or no answer, which is ideal for small traders; builders etc, which make it easier to manage calls.

08 numbers (0800 & 0808 freephone numbers)

Businesses of all categories use these numbers to promote their service or product.
How much do calls cost?
Calls are free from BT landlines, but charges normally apply to mobiles, there is usually a prompt making the caller aware that charges apply.

Chargeable 08 business numbers

Used by businesses and organisations for enquiries, sales, customer services and also sometimes pay as you go internet access services.

0843 & 0844 business numbers

How much do calls cost?
For BT customers, calls are charged up to 5p per minute, calls from other networks and mobiles may vary.

0845 business numbers

How much do calls cost?
From a BT landline, calls are charged 2p per minute daytimes and 0.5p per minute at all other times, and are included in free call packages. Calls from other networks may vary, and mobiles will be considerably more.

0870 numbers

How much do calls cost? Some network providers include 0870 numbers in their call packages, making them free to call at certain times of the day.

0871, 0872 & 0873 numbers

How much do calls cost?
For BT customer’s calls cost up to 10p per minute, for mobiles, calls will cost more. Services on these numbers are regulated by Phonepayplus, to provide extra protection for callers.

09 Premium rate numbers

These numbers are used for ‘paid for services’ such as horoscopes, competitions, advice lines and adult chat lines. You can bar calls to these numbers as you can with other numbers; these are also regulated by Phonepayplus.
How much do calls cost?
From a BT landline these calls cost between 10p per minute and £1.50 per minute, but can cost considerably more from a mobile.
