What has Ofcom changed with regard to 08 numbers?

  • New rules came into effect from 01/08/2009 designed to encourage communication providers to charge 0870 numbers at the same rate as geographic number rates.
  • Charged at the same pence per minute rates and included in communications call package price plans on the same basis as local calls.
  • Ofcom decided from 01/08/2009 that expensive 0871 and 0872 range of numbers will regulated by the premium rate service regulator Phonepayplus.

Yes, revenue sharing generated by pence per minute call charges is permitted on all 084 and 087 numbers.

Can I keep my number if I switch provider?

  • If you choose an indirect access phone provider, you will be accessing there cheaper calls over your existing telephone line.
  • If you choose a new direct access phone supplier, then you can have either a new telephone number or they will arrange for your BT number to be ‘ported’ over to their network, so you can keep your existing number.
